Idea: Vision-POS fusion detects self-checkout fraud by comparing what the camera sees with what the POS system records. It uses computer vision to identify items, item movement, and bagging-area activity. It uses POS logs to track scanned SKU, scan time, price, quantity, and payment status. The system checks whether the visual item sequence matches the scanned item sequence. If an item is placed in the bag without a matching scan, it may indicate skip-scan fraud. If the camera sees an expensive item but POS records a cheaper item, it may indicate item substitution fraud. Example: Camera detects 3 products moved to the bagging area, but POS shows only 2 scanned items. The model flags this as a possible missing-scan case and sends it for associate/manual review. This can reduce store shrink, manual review errors, and unnecessary customer friction. Research contribution: a multimodal ML framework that combines vision + POS data for explainable self-checkout fraud detection.
