Th oldest institution of higher education in San Diego, San Diego University, was established in 1897. The institute started as a training facility for elementary school teachers and has today grown to become a leading public research university. San Diego University is on the top of the list of ethnically and culturally diverse institutions promoting equality. The students and alumni of the university call themselves Aztec and take pride in their diverse community and motivating influence of their alma mater. The university has a long list of notable alumni who have made it to new heights. Some names in the list of many are former Federal Trade Commission chair Timothy Muris, entertainer Gregory Peck, Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, and America's Cup skipper Dennis Conner. The first honorary doctorate from San Diego University was earned by the former President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. It was also the universty's first doctorate in the CSU system.
